Seal Song – Children’s Book Review

Seal Song by Andrea Spalding and Pascal Milelli

This story is beautifully illustrated with the amazing feeling of water and movement. The layering of colour and the monochromatic landscape have the playful impressionistic style. Colour placement is not rounded or smoothed out, the paint is layered on like quilting or pieced together like stain glass.

Seal Song is a story of mysticism and passion for friendship. The children are the heroes in this folklore.

About artist and illustrator

I'm a textile artist, resourceful and excited about making things. Dog walks with my pooch "Charlie" is inspiring and an opportunity to develop ideas from nature and people whom we meet on our strolls. There is a story behind my art making, it's in the series, I don't make just one but many from the same idea, but! not one will look like the other, each piece of art is "one-of-a-kind".

  1. This is quite brilliant for a children’s book. The second picture form the bottom: inspired by Claude Monet?

I agree the folklore and art are wonderful in Seal Song. The artist Pascal Milelli may have been inspired by Monet, her impressionistic style and monochromatic tones fit the Monet theory.
