Filbert the Good Little Fiend – Children’s book review

“Filbert the Good Little Fiend” by Hiawyn Oram & Jimmy Liao

It’s the kid in me! I love this book.

It always begins with the illustrations (for me) I don’t judge a whole book by its cover but in many cases I pick up the book because of its cover. Filbert the good Little Fiend has a lovely cover with the brilliant fall colours, orange, yellow and reds.

Filbert is a child Fiend (little monster) who is expected to live up to the meaning of monster, but it just isn’t in him. One day Florinda a child angel literally falls from the sky right in front of Filbert. She was told that she wasn’t good enough and Filbert not being bad enough got together as friends.

The two children are illustrated with colour and patterns that dance through the pages. The field of flowers under the tree are colourful circles on top of another coloured circle, the birds singing in the tree with heart shape leaves are on top of a brilliant yellow.

Facial expressions and arm gestures are enough to read the illustrations, but the story is just as great.

Enjoy the read – I recommend this one for the Fall season and the Halloween season, Filbert in his angel costume and Florinda in her monster outfit.

Oh! and what school teacher would encourage a PURPLE PAINT fight,  Miss Fearsome-Frizz of course (and maybe me one day).

About artist and illustrator

I'm a textile artist, resourceful and excited about making things. Dog walks with my pooch "Charlie" is inspiring and an opportunity to develop ideas from nature and people whom we meet on our strolls. There is a story behind my art making, it's in the series, I don't make just one but many from the same idea, but! not one will look like the other, each piece of art is "one-of-a-kind".
